Welcome to our August Newsletter!
We’re making some changes to the look and feel of our newsletter, including separating our program updates (in this newsletter), and our events and updates from our network (in an upcoming issue). Our aim is to make it more engaging, easier to read, and better aligned with all the incredible work happening within our organisation and across our network. We’d love your feedback: What do you love about our newsletter? What would you like to see more of (ie. stories, tips, events, resources)? Your input will help shape future editions and ensure we’re keeping you informed and inspired.
On that note, I’m proud to report that our Electric Homes Program is off to a powerful start. We've seen strong community interest and participation already—and it’s energising (pun intended!) to see so many households taking action toward a cleaner, more sustainable future.
And I hope to see you in September at our next Climate Connect event, where we'll be exploring the links between gender and climate. When we understand these links, we're better able to create a fairer and more inclusive future for all. Climate justice is at the heart of what we do at Geelong Sustainability and we're really excited to partner with Women’s Environmental Leadership Australia (WELA), and Women’s Health and Wellbeing Barwon South West on this event. See details below.

Climate Connect: Gender and Climate Justice
Climate change affects all of us, but the ways we experience and respond to it are not the same. Research has shown that gender plays a key role in shaping our vulnerability to climate change and how we’re able to respond to it.
Join us for Climate Connect: Gender and Climate Justice, a powerful evening that brings together local voices, lived experiences, and national expertise to explore the vital intersection of gender and climate justice. Presented by Geelong Sustainability, Women’s Environmental Leadership Australia (WELA), and Women’s Health and Wellbeing Barwon South West

Electric Homes Program Captures Strong Community Interest
Just over one month since its launch, the award-winning Electric Homes Program is already making a big impact across the region with over 300 households registering to increase their home comfort and lower their energy bills.
New homeowners, Maja and her partner, live in a 1970s brick home. Maja works from home and wanted a more comfortable, energy-efficient space.
“I signed up to the Geelong Sustainability newsletter when I moved to the area, and when I saw the Electric Homes Program come through, it was perfect timing, we were just starting renovations,” Maja said.
“We’ve had insulation installed in the walls and under the floor through the Electric Homes Program, and it’s made a huge difference. We barely use the heater now and the house stays warm even on the coldest days. I didn’t realise how much I’d value feeling cosy in winter.”

Over the last year, our Community Power Hub has supported 49 local community organisations with free expert energy advice and hands-on project support to reduce their energy costs and take climate action.
Over the last two years, the Hub has assisted 66 organisations across the region to reduce their running costs by a combined $135,127 per year - enabling these organisations to redirect that funding towards their community service delivery.
If you know of a not-for-profit organisation that is looking to save on their energy costs, or would like to learn more, visit the Community Power Hub. | | Andrew Simpson, General Manager, Queenscliff Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Association, with Emma Chessell, Community Energy Officer, Geelong Sustainability.

Viva Update: Email the Victorian Ports & Freight Minister
Viva Energy and Ports Victoria have begun working on safety and navigation studies related to Viva Energy’s Gas Import Terminal.
The proposed site is too close to residential properties, and the Corio Bay shipping channel is not designed to accommodate large LNG carriers safely.
The Geelong Renewables Not Gas alliance is asking the community to email the Minister for Ports and Freight, Hon Melissa Horne MP, to express their concerns about these navigational and safety studies - requesting that they be made transparent and accessible to the Geelong community and that there will be genuine community consultation.
