Hi Friend,

As we step into mid-year(!), we also move into NAIDOC Week which is celebrating its 50th year. A huge achievement for an incredibly important event that highlights First Nations' voices, culture and resilience. This year’s theme 'The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy' invites us to reflect on the past and look forward together, grounded in respect and unity. In Victoria, this moment is especially significant following the release of the Yoorrook Justice Commission’s final report Yoorrook: Truth Be Told - Victoria's and Australia’s first formal truth-telling inquiry into systemic injustices faced by First Peoples. Thousands of Victorians contributed to this historic process and we all have the opportunity to listen, learn and engage. I encourage you to explore the Truth Archive, attend local NAIDOC events and continue building meaningful relationships with First Nations communities. Over at Geelong Sustainability, we’ll be reflecting on these Truths in our team meetings as part of our ongoing commitment to learning and reconciliation.

We're excited to power up our Electric Homes Program for its third year - making it as easy as possible for households across the region to save on energy bills, move away from gas, take climate action and make their homes more comfortable in all temperatures. We've done all the hard work for you by engaging trusted suppliers, securing great prices and ensuring there are a range of options for all households. We’re also very happy to share that we’ve been awarded funding through Sustainability Victoria’s Community Electrification Engagement Program to support the Barwon South West community to electrify their homes.

Lastly, I want to highlight an important opportunity for you to connect and contribute locally. Want to get more involved in local action but don't know where to start? Our upcoming Creating Change volunteer night is the perfect way to learn more about local volunteering opportunities and meet like-minded people - find out more below. I hope to see you there.

Stay warm,

Jane and the Geelong Sustainability team

Vopak Submission

We recently made a submission through Engage Victoria on the draft Scoping Requirements for the Vopak Energy Terminal Environment Effects Statement (EES). While our priority focus is no new gas infrastructure, we are keen to ensure our voice is heard through this process. We called for key amendments around the inclusion of climate change as a ‘high priority’ concern and the need to consider both upstream and downstream climate effects of the project (including transport and gas emissions intensity). Read our submission.

Email your MP with pre-filled email template

Our local MPs have not strongly heard our dismay at the environmental approval for the Viva Gas Import Terminal, so we need more emails heading their way.

To help, we have pre-written an email that you can use to send to your local MP regarding your concerns about the Viva Energy Gas Import Terminal proposal. Copy and paste the text into your email, edit it to make it personal including adding your name, and then send it to your local MP. You can take the text from this PDF or Google Document.
